NVEEE Hosts Anti-Bullying Summit

Bullying Prevention Organization and Recipient of WWE’s Be a STAR Grant, NVEEE, to Host the Miami-Dade and Broward County Anti-Bullying Summit During National Bullying Prevention Week

Hosted by The Honor’s College at Florida International University

Miami, FL – November 21, 2014- On Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 9:30AM – 3:30PM National Voices for Equality, Education and Enlightenment (NVEEE), a national anti-bullying organization based in South Florida, along with The Honor’s College at Florida International University (FIU), will host the Miami-Dade and Broward County Bullying Prevention Summit. Schools and Community organizations are encouraged to attend this free event and learn best bullying prevention practices.

This summit is predominantly a student-led educational event featuring a panel of trained student ambassadors and industry experts, which discuss topics such as girl-to-girl bullying, cyber-bullying, suicide prevention, sexting, social alienation, gender and orientation, socioeconomic status, and more. WWE Superstar Darren Young will be a featured panelist speaking on the topic of being an upstander vs. a bystander.

“I am honored to be a part of the NVEEE Bullying Prevention Summit,” said WWE Superstar Darren Young. “I am committed to help end the bullying epidemic, and I am lucky to be able to use WWE’s global platforms to help spread the message of inclusion and acceptance. “

During the 2013 summit, we learned from students in our local South Florida community that cyberbullying was their primary fear and the most undesirable type of bullying they could ever face. The rise of social media has taken bullying from a silent epidemic to front and center. Many youth who are faced with cyber bullying today are not equipped with the tools to properly compartmentalize or even know what to do when faced with the situation. NVEEE’s role has been not only to raise awareness, but to provide education and resources for families and school systems.

“Our focus is always on prevention education instead of reaction tactics and crisis management. In honor of all the lives impacted and lost due to bullying, we were inspired by students in our Peace Ambassador program to launch the #bUPstanding media campaign, urging everyone to use #bUPstanding and share stories of when they were an upstander vs a bystander. It’s an honor to have the support of WWE,” says NVEEE’s Executive Director, Jowharah Sanders.

As part of its focus on prevention education, this past summer the organization hosted its inaugural five day Peace Ambassador Leadership Summit for students ages 14-18 at Florida International University.  As part of the summit, 100 scholarships were funded by FIU’s Center for Leadership and Service, Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Wells Fargo, and through a grant provided by the Be a STAR anti-bullying campaign (founded by WWE and The Creative Coalition). The goal of the scholarships is to help students who have been bullied while teaching the leadership and social skills necessary to become empowered upstanders and NVEEE Peace Ambassadors.
